What is FRINGE WORLD?

FRINGE WORLD is a summer celebration held in Perth and Western Australia each year.

It’s the largest annual event in WA and the third largest Fringe in the world. The 2021 FRINGE WORLD Festival will run for 31 days from 15 January - 14 February.

The program of events is all about variety and offering something for absolutely everyone. The line-up includes comedy, circus, free and family entertainment, theatre, visual arts, musicals, dance and cabaret presented by Western Australian artists along with performers from all over the world.

We’ve been entertaining the people of Perth with Fringe entertainment since 2011 and we can’t wait to see the city come alive again in 2020!

When is FRINGE WORLD?

Who produces FRINGE WORLD?

FRINGE WORLD is produced by ARTRAGE INC, a not for profit registered charity whose purpose is to enrich and evolve the culture of Western Australia. ARTRAGE INC was founded in 1983 and is one of the oldest arts organisations in WA.

Alongside producing FRINGE WORLD, ARTRAGE INC also produces and manages a number of other arts and entertainment enterprises including Rooftop Movies and Girls School Cinema.

For more information about Artrage INC and FRINGE WORLD, please read the 2019 FRINGE WORLD Impact Report.

What shows are in the Festival?

The shows in the Festival offer something for everyone with comedy, caberet, theatre, music and musicals, children's events, circus and more on offer for you to enjoy.

FRINGE WORLD is an open-access Festival, which means anyone can participate and it's up to the artists to decide to be part of the Fringe.

The Festival is a big platform for local artists, with more than 70% of participating artists coming from WA, alongside performances by artists from Australia and all over the world.

FRINGE WORLD is proud that since 2012 more than $46 million has been paid out to participating artists and arts companies by the Festival. This is all thanks to the hundreds of thousands of customers that see their shows each year!

The Festival supports its artists through a range of initiatives including an Awards program that is one of the most generous of any festival in the world. Donations to the Fringe Fund help to support the FRINGE WORLD Awards and help our artists shine.

The 2021 Festival will be held from 15 January - 14 February at more than 150 venues all over Perth and regional WA.

Venues and seating

What time should I arrive for my show?

Most shows are around 60 minutes in length. This is also the ideal time to arrive pre-show.

Allow at least 60 minutes before the show to find a park or make your way from your public transport stop, collect your tickets from a Box Office (if required), find your venue and grab a pre-show drink or meal.

A queue will form outside your venue before show time and most shows have unallocated seating, so line up early to get your pick of the seats.

Unfortunately, latecomers may not be admitted.

I have tickets to two shows in one night. Is there enough time for me to get from one venue to another?

We have many different venues throughout the city, in the ‘burbs and beyond so please make sure you allow yourself extra time to get from venue to venue.

Can I choose where to sit when buying my tickets?

Most seating is unreserved and is filled on a first come, first serve basis when you arrive at the venue. It is recommended you line up early for a good spot.

Become a Fringe Friend and secure a Skip the Line Multi-Pass to get the best seats in the house!

What's the best way to get to my venue?

Public transport is a great way to get to your show, and you can plan your jouney at transperth.wa.gov.au or download the Tranperth app. Remember that parking at Transperth stations is FREE on weekends.

When you're in the CBD or Northbridge you can catch a FREE ride to Girls School in East Perth with the FRINGE CAT. Operating every 15 mins Sun-Thur until 11.20pm and Fri-Sat until 12.05am during the Festival. More info is at the Transperth website.

The City of Perth also has a 3-hour FREE parking trial at select locations on weekends. Visit cityofperthparking.com.au for more info.

Can I smoke in any of the venues?

All indoor performance areas are smoke free.

What do I need to bring to Fringe Hubs and venues?

Many FRINGE WORLD venues are licensed and you may be asked for valid Photo ID to gain entry. In some instances, under 18's are welcome to licensed areas but must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian and the decision to allow entry is entirely at the discretion of the licensee. Each venue can have different licensing conditions so please check the venue license rules on our website before purchasing a ticket.

Bars and foodies in our Hubs (i.e. The Woodside Pleasure Garden, Ice Cream Factory, Yagan Square, Girls School and  the Urban Orchard) are now cashless but bring some cash along to support the talented buskers as there are no ATMs on sites. If a customer only has cash and wants to purchase from a foodie or bar, they can go to the box office and request a cash card, payable with cash.

What help is there if I feel threatened or have an issue at a venue?

We want FRINGE WORLD to be a safe and welcoming place for all.

FRINGE WORLD is produced by ARTRAGE INC, a not for profit registered charity. ARTRAGE INC directly manages a number of venues in the Festival such as the main  Hubs  in Northbridge and Perth CBD i.e. The Woodside Pleasure Garden, The Ice Cream Factory, Girls School, the pop up venues at FRINGE Central in The Perth Cultural Centre and the pop-up venues at Yagan Square. Read on for information about how to get help at one of these Hubs.

All other venues are independently managed and any issues or concerns should be raised with the venue management or please contact us here and we can assist.

If you are at one of our Hubs and need assistance, find someone with a FRINGE WORLD t-shirt and they will assist you. If you have a delicate matter you would like to discuss, then look out for team members with a ‘smiley face’ badge on their shirt. These have been hand-selected and trained to assist in delicate situations. These staff also have a current Working With Children Check.

At these Hubs,  FRINGE WORLD has adopted the “Ask For Freddie” safety campaign, which is based on the internationally recognised safety campaign “Ask for Angela”. This initiative encourages those feeling threatened on a FRINGE WORLD site to approach any bar staff, site security or any person with a FRINGE WORLD staff t-shirt  to use the code work “Freddie” and signify they require assistance.

Security are a welcome presence at all FRINGE WORLD Hubs and all security personnel are first aid trained.
